AT&T Named Best Place to Work for LGBT Employees
Nov 15, 2012 (M2 PRESSWIRE via COMTEX) --
Dallas , Texas -- For the ninth consecutive year, AT&T * has been listed in the Human Rights Campaign (HRC) Foundation's "Best Places to Work" for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) employees. The recognition follows the result findings from this year's HRC Corporate Equality Index (CEI), in which AT&T scored 100 percent.
"At AT&T, diversity and inclusion are business imperatives and key to our continued success," said Debbie Storey, AT&T senior vice president of talent development and chief diversity officer. "We've seen over and over again that by harnessing the diverse backgrounds, experiences, and perspectives of our global workforce we're able to meet the needs of the diverse communities we serve."
In 1975 AT&T became one of the first Fortune 500 companies to adopt a non-discrimination policy toward sexual orientation and, in 1999, one of the first to adopt domestic partner benefits for LGBT employees.
Among others, AT&T provides the following:
- Health insurance benefits offered to domestic partners beginning in 1999 and, since 2005, to legally recognized partners.
- Qualified pre-retirement survivor annuity pension offered to spouses and partners.
- Health insurance plan coverage for transition-related treatment of transgender individuals.
- Mandatory training for new hires on AT&T's non-discrimination policy, including sexual orientation and gender identity.
- Outreach to the LGBT community including recruiting, marketing, community involvement and support for LGBT equality.
AT&T's efforts to ensure all employees have the opportunity to be fully included in the company's mission is further evidenced by its 11 employee resource groups, which offer opportunities for employees to learn, network, collaborate and develop professionally. All of these groups, including LEAGUE at AT&T - the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender and Allies Organization at AT&T -- are supportive partners in AT&T's business. LEAGUE at AT&T was founded by employees in 1987, making it the first LGBT employee resource group in corporate America.
"LEAGUE at AT&T congratulates AT&T on scoring 100 percent for the ninth year on CEI's 'Best Places to Work,'" said LEAGUE President Mark Carden. "This score reflects the commitment and consistency that AT&T shows in supporting a diverse and safe workplace for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender employees. LEAGUE values the relationship and partnership with AT&T to ensure the company is the best place to work and that it offers the best products and services to our community. We look forward to AT&T continuing to earn this score for years to come," Carden added.
Beyond workplace equality, AT&T's products and services also reflect and appeal to the diverse markets the company serves, including the LGBT community. For more information on AT&T and the LGBT Community, check out the Commitment to the LGBT Community video .
