Michael "Mike" Crowley to Receive City of Hope's Spirit of Life® Award at the National Insurance Industry Council's Annual Gala
The National Insurance Industry Council has selected Michael "Mike"
Crowley, vice chairman (retired) of Markel Corporation, as the recipient
of the 2018 Spirit of Life® Award. The award
will be presented on Saturday, Sept. 22, at the council's 40th
anniversary Spirit
of Life Gala in Atlanta, which benefits City of Hope.
"City of Hope's lifesaving mission impacts the lives of so many cancer
and diabetes patients," Crowley said. "I am humbled to be this year's Spirit
of Life honoree and to support such an amazing institution."
Each year, the National Insurance Industry Council presents the
Spirit of Life Award to an individual who exemplifies the ideals and
values that have guided City of Hope for over a century, and whose
professional and humanitarian accomplishments are worthy of celebration.
Recipients of this prestigious award include a broad range of leaders
from the worlds of business, entertainment, science and philanthropy.
What connects them is a shared commitment to elevating the human
condition and a profound belief in the power of each individual to
effect change.

InterContinental Buckhead Atlanta, kicking off the annual industry

About Michael "Mike" Crowley
F. Michael "Mike" Crowley is an executive consultant to Markel
Corporation. He retired from Markel at the end of 2017. During 2018,
Crowley will transition his duties, responsibilities and relationships
with key producers and clients to designated employees of Markel. He
will continue o consult with Markel through the end of 2021. Crowley
joined Markel in February 2009 as president of Markel Specialty. He was
promoted to president and co-chief operating officer of Markel
Corporation in 2010, then to vice chairman in 2016. Crowley has more
than 40 years of experience in the insurance industry. Prior to joining
Markel, he served as president of Willis/HRH North America, and as
president and chief operating officer of Hilb, Rogal & Hobbs, which was
acquired by Willis in 2008. Crowley began his insurance career in 1974
with Johnson & Higgins and served in several leadership positions,
including senior vice president of Virginia Operations and on several
national practice committees. In 1991, he joined Palmer and Cay, a large
privately owned insurance broker based in Savannah, Georgia, where he
served as president and chief operating officer, prior to being named
vice chairman. Crowley earned his Bachelor of Business Administration
degree from Wake Forest University. He serves on Wake Forest's Board of
Visitors, as well as the Board of Overseers for St. John's University
School of Risk Management, Insurance, and Actuarial Science.
