Defense agency BAE Systems Inc. has agreed to handle the call center of Pension Benefit Guaranty Corporation, responding to hundreds of inquiries from Fortune 500 companies and small firms about their annual pension plan filings and insurance premium payments.

The contract has a timeline of five years and is valued at $10.8 million.

Rockville, Md.-based agency oversees more than 29,000 defined benefit pension plans, which cover 44 million employees and retirees.

During the past four years, BAE has supported the PBGC’s conversion to an electronic filing system that thousands of companies use to ensure that their pension funding requirements are being met.

For 15 years, BAE Systems (News - Alert) has provided qualified, trained analysts and accounting professionals to the PBGC.

With the focus on customer service, the agency said, wait times have been reduced to less than 10 seconds and most questions are answered on the first call.

"Our staff knows how crucial customer service is to an agency like the PBGC," said Tom Sechler of BAE Systems Intelligence & Security. "The team plays an integral role in supporting PBGC's mission of protecting the financial security of America's retirees."

BAE Systems is a defense, security and aerospace company with approximately 107,000 employees worldwide. In 2009 BAE Systems reported sales of GBP 22.4 billion (US $36.2 billion).

Recently, the agency won a $7 million contract to provide Daimler Trucks North America with armoring kits for military vehicles being used in Afghanistan and Iraq.

According to a press release, the order follows on a $32 million contract for the kits awarded by Daimler in September 2009.
