The concept of workload automation is becoming more prevalent as traditional job schedulers need to react to the dynamic demands of IT. Workload automation needs to be able to coordinate—in real-time—a varied set of workload types with complex dependencies across a broad spectrum of operating systems and application platforms.

That is where BMC comes in.

BMC Software (News - Alert), a provider of Business Service Management solutions, recently revealed its findings based on a survey they conducted on workload automation. They found that more than 73 percent of the respondents expected their workload capacity to increase over the next 24 months while 38 percent of the companies were servicing requests from 50 or more business users that generated hundreds of service requests monthly.

Workload Automation enables companies to easily manage composite business and IT workloads that have complex dependencies spanning multiple applications, systems including mainframe, distributed and high-performance grid computing environments. It also helps to optimize resource utilization, IT management costs and productivity throughout the enterprise.

Businesses are using BMC’s recently announced, Control-M Self Service solution which has provided a view of relevant workload status and service authorities needed to support customers using a simple Web-browser interface. BMC cites that more than 30 companies purchased the solution within 90 days of its launch on January 24, 2011.

“At Morneau Shepell, our business and the accurate administration of our customers’ pension and benefit programs is dependent upon scheduled processing and automation performing efficiently, “ said Michael Bobbato, advisory analyst, at Morneau Shepell, a Canadian-based human resource consulting and outsourcing services firm. “With BMC’s Control-M version 7 and Control-M Self Service solutions, we can now process the workloads more effectively and give business users access to view the status of their jobs while reducing IT costs and resources. This helps guarantee the timely and accurate administration of pensions and benefits for our customers.”

Others have tapped BMC for their workload automation needs, such as The City of Long Beach, Crédit Andorrá and Allianz Life Insurance Company.

Market intelligence from research firm Gartner (News - Alert) also stresses the importance of workload automation.

“One of the most pressing needs for the current day IT infrastructure is the ability to be flexible in deploying applications and systems that manage business requests,” said Milind Govekar, research vice president at Gartner. “With the ever increasing pressure to keep IT costs low, but be flexible enough to handle calls to action, many IT organizations are turning to automation tools, specifically tools that enable non-IT personnel to access workloads, to drive critical business processes and resources across a complex and dynamic IT environment.”
