An "above-normal" hurricane season is being predicted by the climate experts at the National Oceanic (News - Alert) and Atmospheric Administration or NOAA. This year, the United States is expected to experience 12 to 18 named storms out of which 6 to 10 could develop into hurricanes. Three to six major hurricanes of Category 3 strength or higher are also expected. Boaters in hurricane-prone regions have reason for concern due to current era of high activity. Boaters therefore need to have preparation plans in place to tackle the probable hurricane or a severe storm.

In a release, Jane Lubchenco, Ph.D., who is the Under-Secretary of Commerce for oceanic and atmosphere and NOAA administrator, said, "The United States was fortunate last year. Winds steered most of the season's tropical storms and all hurricanes away from our coastlines. However, we can't count on luck to get us through this season. We need to be prepared, especially with this above-normal outlook."

Proactive measures need to be taken by boat owners and the marine community. Apart from reducing damage to boats, these measures will also minimize the potential for injuries. A list of top ten important tips has been released by ACE Recreational Marine Insurance. During the hurricane season, recreational boaters will be able to better protect their vessels and other property on board using these tips.

Damon R. Hostetter, Senior Vice President for ACE Recreational Marine Insurance, said, "The best defenses to protecting your boat from hurricanes or any severe weather are planning, preparation and timely action. It's important for boat owners to be aware of preventative measures they can take during the hurricane season."

Hostetter believes it is better to have complete knowledge about proactive safety practices on the water. This knowledge will prove to be beneficial to recreational boaters.

Free preparation guides are also offered by ACE, including Hurricanes and Severe Storms and Hurricane Preparation Tips for Boaters.
