Are you looking to travel sometime soon? Plenty of people are, and given that it’s hurricane season, InsureMyTrip, an online provider of travel insurance, is expecting its services to be in high demand.

The hurricane season began just a few days ago, with NOAA predicting anywhere from 13 to 20 named storms striking. Out of those, seven to 11 of them could become hurricanes, and half of those have a chance of becoming major ones. Each one of those has a chance of wreaking havoc, but brave travelers are willing to risk the chance of storms, so long as they’re properly insured.

Now, the travel insurance in question provides coverage for weather-related trip cancellations and interruptions. If a vacationer willingly heads into a huge storm, any injuries from that are on his own head for being so foolish. However, if a trip on an airline or cruise is cancelled due to the weather, that’s covered. If a storm devastates an area, whether it’s a destination or primary residence, causing one to cancel a trip, that tends to be covered as well. Some policies allow cancellation at any time, though it varies depending on the policy.

Still, there are plenty of opportunities for something to go wrong, so clever travelers are following the adage of “hope for the best, expect the worst.” They’re still planning vacations as usual, but with the knowledge that storms and hurricanes are getting ready to strike, it’s best to take extra precautions.

“Trip cancellation and interruption protection is based on the occurrence of unforeseen events,” said Jim Grace, CEO of InsureMyTrip. “Once a storm has been publicly identified, it can only spell trouble for travelers without insurance protection. You need to purchase travel insurance coverage before a storm is predicted and named, not when it’s bearing down on you or your intended destination.”

It’s better to be safe than sorry, as the saying goes. Travelers know this, but they’re still willing to take a risk and plan a trip. Still, with all the potential storms, it’s a smart move to prepare for the worst, which is why travel insurance will be seeing a high demand in the coming days. Insurance salesmen will be pleased with all the increased demand, and hopefully travelers will be pleased with the level of backup it provides.
