One of the greatest benefits of digital technology is it allows businesses to eliminate processes and methodologies that in the past slowed growth and made up a considerable percentage of the overall operational cost of the organization. While paper has served civilization very well, and still continues to do so to this day, for large organizations it is a technology that can be described as slowing down the workflow of a company to a tortoise pace compared to digital solutions. Mercury Insurance, a property and casualty insurer in California, has selected to implement OnBase, an enterprise content management (ECM) solution, platform for a single, streamlined process automation and paperless workflow solution throughout the organization.

With OnBase, Mercury Insurance will be able to increase its efficiency across all departments within the organization by eliminating the ongoing support and maintenance cost of its existing document management system. The company will be more agile and flexible to make quick and informed market decisions as they happen without having to go through the endless processes of previous solutions.

The company announced it has successfully integrated OnBase with Guidewire PolicyCenter during phase one of its implementation of this platform, which will allow it to improve its document management and workflow for national underwriting operations. As the company continues to implement different phases, Mercury insurance will be integrating additional OnBase solutions, including Guidewire ClaimCenter, Guidewire BillingCenter and Guidewire InsuranceSuite.

These applications will give Mercury: electronic foldering functionality from within; a seamless, secure integration to complement and extend functionality; and enable faster, more accurate processing and a reduction in implementation and training costs.

“Becoming a paperless organization is just the beginning of the benefits we will see with OnBase,” said Allan Lubitz, SVP and CIO at Mercury Insurance. “OnBase is a configurable solution that will meet our immediate ECM and repository needs but will also provide business process automation throughout the organization to ensure our employees have the right information at the right time to ultimately make better, faster, and more informed decisions.”

The OnBase functionality of mobile device integration allows insurance adjusters in the field to access critical information seamlessly while ensuring secure transmission.

The mobile accessibility features include:

  • Secure access to critical documents
  • Automated workflows to quickly process claims
  • Real-time delivery notifications of new claims and work items
  • Signature capture
  • Incorporation with the device's camera and mapping from the claim record

“We are delighted to welcome Mercury Insurance into our insurance community. We look forward to helping Mercury Insurance continue to streamline processes and become more efficient,” said Cheryl Nulman, insurance industry marketing manager at Hyland, creator of OnBase.
